Lighthouse are looking for volunteers to assist with our Holiday Workshops this coming March/April. All you need is a teaching registration/current WCC and a readiness to be blown away by what young people have to offer.
Our pilot programs this year quite often wielded me dumbstruck - at the students, at their ideas and creativity, at people's willingness to help, and at the ease with which help was given and received. Conversations flow. Ideas are shared and grow. And it is through these interactions - not a masters in writing or youth work - that these young adults see that they are valued, and that they are able to contribute meaningfully.
Young people in 2016 are in a unique position. These future runners-of-the-world are going to inherit a myriad of new-world problems and us oldies aren't going to be in a great position to help. Much like mums (me) who ask their kids (my 7-year-old Tornado) to help with technology, on a larger scale we are going to need to rely on today's youth to find new and unique ways to deal with issues that the world has never faced. These young people, then, are one of our greatest treasures and should be valued.
Largely, the Lighthouse is about valuing young people and what they have to offer, now. We recognise that they are going to need flexible skill sets to succeed in this new world, and they are going to need to have the confidence to grow and change with the world they inhabit. Workshops that allow young adults to be creative, share their ideas and practice being critical thinkers contribute to these skill sets. We are investing in a more prosperous future by starting to value these creative, unique thinkers now. Be a part of something great. Sign up to volunteer with us now.
